(Where you once stayed)

I wrote something in Hindi which is my mother tongue and for some reason it gives me a different level of comfort when I write something in Hindi. It soothes my soul. But I know a lot of you are more comfortable in english so I’ve tried to translate the poem while struggling to maintain the essence (which was an arduous process). Please scroll down for the English version. Do read and have fun reading!!

And here’s the English translation as promised!

Heard in silences yesterday
What emptiness wants to say
Where you once stayed
A pain lives today

When you get hurt
Why do I feel the pain?
When you are disturbed
Why do i feel the same?
I don’t remember, when I last saw your face
Still my heart, doesn’t part with your image
Where you once stayed
A pain lives today

It’s been so long, that I’ve thought of you
But your intoxication never went away
I told myself, I erased your memories
A darkness whispered, I’m here to stay
I lay wide awake
And wide awake you lay
Where you once stayed
A pain lives today
The illusion assures me
This void will also decay
Where you once stayed
A pain lives today

  2. It is a mark of mastery of a language when you can write poetry – I never thought that you were not a native speaker of English! Well done. And this poem must truly be a marvel in Hindi because it is wonderful in English!

    1. Thank you so much! You’re very kind to say that. As and Indian Hindi comes more naturally to me but english is a necessity specially if you want more people to be able to read what you’re writing
